This is the most popular wood of the Adirondack style. The
new growth twigs (1/2" - 1" diameter) are colored red to
dark brown. As the tree grows to larger diameters (1" - 4")
the bark begins to change to an iridescent gold. This variety
is used for both legs and trim. Susceptible to borer worms.
A New York hardwood with integrity. It makes
strong joints and the bark never fails (peels off).
Colors and textures vary based on growth
environment.
White Ash
Yellow Birch
Willow
Willow cross pollinates so the varieties are endless.
Although most are shades of brown, I have found
and propagated some promising colors which will be
available in another couple of years. Willow is
primarily used for trim and decoration.
Birch Bark
Grey Birch ranges in color from smooth white to
textured grey. This bark varies a great deal from
thin and smooth to thick and rough.
face side:
We choose bark with some character. For
durability and ease of care, we avoid material that
is curling up or peeling.
reverse side:
Using the reverse side expands the color range
from gold to red and dappled brown. A variety of
blotchy patterns occur with colors like tan, rust,
and black. Once in awhile the bark is peeled from
the tree without cambium residue. This clean bark,
or one that is cleaned by scrubbing, dries at a
golden color.
